Shadow performance for AUBMC 150th anniversary in Lebanon
On the momentous occasion of the 150th anniversary of the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), the stage came alive with the mesmerizing art form of human shadow theatre. Shadow Theatre Verba crafted a captivating performance that took the audience on a historical journey through the remarkable evolution of AUBMC. With a seamless blend of shadow play, animation, and sound, we beautifully depicted the key milestones that have shaped the institution since its inception in 1866.
As the beginning of the performance, the audience was transported back in time to witness the founding of the AUB. Silhouettes gracefully depicted the Syrian Protestant School, which laid the foundation for this esteemed institution. A powerful moment ensued as the animation showcased the date “December 1, 1867,” representing the establishment of the medical school.
The Journey Begins
The scene transitioned, and the audience witnessed a mesmerizing transformation. An image of the first graduating class appeared, and as more students joined, their joyous celebration was depicted as they threw their hats into the air. This enchanting sight marked the year 1871, when the AUBMC proudly produced its first batch of graduates.
Building the Legacy
Silhouettes masterfully constructed the iconic Medical School building, providing a visual representation of progress. The animation highlighted the year 1873, forever etching this milestone in the collective memory of AUBMC.
The stage came alive with the image of an engaged audience and a dedicated teacher. The animation symbolically transformed Arabic to English on a board, signifying the institution’s embrace of Arab-English instruction in 1883.
The performance took a momentous turn as the spotlight shone on a professor presenting a diploma to the first woman to graduate from the school in 1935. This powerful portrayal acknowledged the institution’s commitment to gender equality and academic excellence.
A Journey Through Adversity

Pioneering Research and Innovation
Silhouettes moved with purpose, creating a laboratory scene adorned with laptops and dedicated researchers. The animation revealed the word “bioethics,” a testament to AUBMC’s commitment to cutting-edge medical research and ethical principles. The year 2010 marked the institution’s forward-thinking vision.
